Percival Lafer (1936)

Percival Lafer studied Architecture at the Mackenzie Presbyterian University in São Paulo, but later ended up taking over the family furniture business alongside his brothers, The Lafer Co., which was later renamed Lafer MP (Móveis Patenteados – “Patented Furniture”). This shift in path ultimately redefined his career, leading him to one of the most significant trajectories in Brazilian industrial design.

With an innovative and unconventional vision for his time, Lafer believed that good design should not be restricted to an elite. He broke away from traditional distribution models and brought modern furniture into department stores and neighborhood shops, democratizing access to design in Brazil.

From 1961 onwards, with the launch of the MP-1 armchair, he introduced a new language in modernist furniture: slender structures, pioneering combinations of wood and metal, the elimination of traditional steel springs, and the use of industrial foams—reflecting an experimental and deeply functional approach.

His work is defined by formal boldness, exploration of new materials, and a constant balance between aesthetics, comfort, and industrial production. Pieces such as his reclining chairs became international icons, the result of a long and meticulous development process in which time was never a limiting factor.

Percival Lafer established himself as one of the central figures of Brazilian modernist design, with a body of work that combines technical innovation, social vision, and a distinctive aesthetic identity.
