Guerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888-1964) was a Dutch architect and furniture designer.

The first prototypes of the chair were designed in 1918 and later around 1923 the chair was painted in red, yellow, blue and black colors, associated with the Dutch de Stijl art and architecture movement.

The chair is made of painted wood and is in excellent condition.
