Maria Bonomi
Maria Bonomi born in 1935 in Italy and raised in Brazil from early childhood, is one of the most important figures in contemporary Brazilian printmaking, recognized for her pioneering work in large-scale woodcut and for her integration of art, architecture, and space.
In her work, engraving ceases to be a surface and becomes structure, rhythm, and presence. The artist transforms woodcut into an architectural language, where wood is not merely a matrix but both body and space.
Her practice expands the traditional boundaries of printmaking, moving closer to sculpture and architecture. Each work emerges from a profound gesture into matter, revealing layers of memory, tension, and movement.
Bonomi builds visual territories: breathing surfaces, narrative walls, spaces that carry the imprint of time and the hand. Her practice reinvents the idea of repetition in printmaking, replacing it with intensity, scale, and sensory density.
