Flötotto
In 1906 Heinrich Flötotto founded a home furniture carpentry company in Gütersloh, Germany.
In the 1940s the company grew rapidly due to the early switch to series production.
In 1946 Heinrich's sons, Franz and Fritz, joined the company. Franz was in charge of the home furniture line and Fritz dedicated himself to the school and office furniture line.
In 1952, the innovative molded seat, which later became world famous, was patented. It consisted of a chair seat made from compacted beech plywood soaked in phenolic resin. A seat made of wood with the advantages of plastic. The curved backrest was stable and extremely resistant to breaking no matter how hard you tried to bend or break it. More than 21 million pieces were sold.
This chair shaped and changed the image of classrooms and student workplaces like no other.
Between 1969 and 1991, the third generation of the family inherited the company. Franz's sons, Elmar and Hubertus, as well as Fritz's son, Reinhard, independently developed different business areas, all of them related to the production or distribution of furniture for the private and public sector.
In the 1970s, Flötotto created a pioneering design that still shapes the brand's strong image today.
The traditional company went through difficult years, with several changes of management and had to file for bankruptcy twice.
Today, the founder's great-grandson, Frederik Flötotto, has been running the company for the fourth generation since 2008.
