The Hotel Nacional was part of Brasilia's history. It was designed by architect Nauro Estêves, who worked closely with Oscar Niemeyer to build the city. The interior design was carried out by Decoração Wolko Ltda, based in Rio de Janeiro.

The 10-storey, 347-room building was inaugurated on the same day as the city of Brasilia, April 21, 1961.

It has been visited by celebrities, international personalities and political figures such as former US presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan; former French president Charles De Gaulle; and former Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi.
In 1968, the Queen of England, Elizabeth II, stayed in the presidential suite.
Various politicians and business figures stayed for years in the hotel's suites until it fell into decline and was auctioned off.
