Bukhara rugs
Bukhara rugs owe their name to the city of the same name in Uzbekistan. Unlike other Persian and Asian cities, which gave their name to weaving styles or specific types of carpets, Bukhara was never a center of concentrated production. On the contrary, the city of Bukhara, due to its strategic location near the borders with Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan, established itself as the most important commercial center in the region. From there, carpets quickly reached the West and became part of the culture of other peoples.
Bukhara's carpets have a clear link to tribal tradition. The colors, symbols and construction techniques are typical of the carpets produced in this area. The classic Bukhara carpet, especially the models produced in the 20th century, can be recognized by its intense red color, the frame, which defines the boundaries of the carpet field and the use of high-quality fibers, where the pile is soft and of medium thickness.
The most common motifs are the gul (lozenge shaped or octagonal), repeated throughout the field of the carpet, as well as other tribal symbols, which are stylized representations of themes inspired by the daily life of the local population.
More recently, Bukhara rugs have been offered in other colors, while retaining their distinctive features.
