Angelo Gaetano Sciolari 1927 - 1994, was an Italian designer and entrepreneur. He contributed to the expansion of Italian design throughout the world and, in particular, in the United States.
Although Sciolari Lighting had existed since 1892, it was his most famous descendant, Gaetano Sciolari, who led the family business with a passionate vision and, within a few years, expanded the business and began working with other lighting companies around the world.
After graduating from architecture school, Sciolari began his career as a film director, but after his father's death in 1949, the 22-year-old took over the family business. Although this new position meant a radical change, Gaetano ran the company with great vision.
In 1954, the company won an international lighting and design competition. An important milestone was the exclusive distribution of American Lightolier products, making Sciolari the first Italian lighting manufacturer sold in the USA and, consequently, the largest importer in the lighting market.
His first projects were inspired by the space age. He created refined, futuristic and bold pieces. The lines were clean and sculptural.
The use of crystal and glass brought brilliance to his creations, with a voluptuously luxurious freshness. Sciolari broke the traditional rules by combining brass with chrome,
Sciolari was synonymous with innovation. Some of his pieces even made their way into renowned television series, such as the British science fiction series of the 1970s - Space: 1999 - and later, in 1983, the series Dallas, where the look represented a modern and glamorous life.
He was also the founder and first president of the trade association of Italian lighting manufacturers, which is still very active today.
Sciolari's lighting manufacturers included Stilnovo (Milan), Boulanger (Belgium) and Stilkronen (Germany).
