Pierre d'Avesn

Pierre d'Avesn (1901-1990) is an artistic pseudonym adopted by Pierre Girre, a talented designer who from the age of 14 worked for René Lalique, the great French glass master. For 10 years Pierre Girre designed various pieces that were signed by René Lalique, as other designers were not allowed to sign their own designs. Pierre Girre designed some of the brand's best-known pieces, which remain among its most sought-after models to this day, such as the "Serpent" and "Tourbillons" vases.

In 1924, after 10 years working for René Lalique, Pierre d'Avesn set up his own factory and worked with the Saint Rémy glassworks to produce his molds, signing them "P. d'Avesn".

In 1930, at the age of 29, Daum Freres asked him to take over as artistic director of the molded glass department at his Croismare glassworks in Luneville, where he remained until 1936.

In 1937, he took over the management of the Verlys glass factory (one of the best opal glass factories in France at the time) until the outbreak of the Second World War. From 1940, he was self-employed. His pieces were manufactured by the Cristallerie de Choisy-le-Roi (Sèvres).
